Bold Heavy Antique Black Glass French Food Storage Jar with Pontil Good Condtion. Excellent Vase for Flowers or Dried Arrangements. Large, heavy handblown antique storage or food jar in the very desirable dark wine-bottle green color. This jar is 11¾ inches high and has a diameter of about 5½ inches. It weighs just a tad more than 3¾ pounds.
Lots of quaint irregularities -- interesting irregular neck with indentation, some light surface scratches and minor defects from the making which add to its great interest. It has a particularly deep polished pontil on the bottom and good wear marks. In France these are called bocals (jars) or cornichons , which is the word for small pickled cucumbers. They were filled with food for preserving and then a cloth was placed over the top and tied around the crimped neck.
These date from the early 19th century, from about 1800 to 1830. Thank you for looking at our item. _gsrx_vers_854 GS 7.0.18 (854).
