René Lalique designed his complete "Garniture de Toilette (Bathroom Set) Dahlia" in 1931 (photo 8 from the Marcilhac book, the unofficial Lalique "Bible"). It included 7 pieces: 4 bottles, 2 boxes and a bowl for a sponge. Also included as options were 3 spray bottles ranging in size from 18 cm to 9, sometimes fitted with a rubber spray-pear as is the case here, or coming without it as is the case on photo 9.

Ladies, at the time had their own spray devices which is why Lalique offered the option with or without. 3", the middle bottle (there is no "Nr 1), 15 cm tall or 6" tall, 2 1/4 " wide and weighing just under 1 Lb empty. This spray bottle is "Post-1945" (René Lalique's death) and is therefore signed "Lalique France" (photo 10).

Lalique's personal signature, R LALIQUE FRANCE, was never used after his death. It was then discontinued, with only the smallest one Nr. 4 (not a spray), still produced nowadays. One comforting factor about the "Dahlia" items is that, from creation and throughout their life, the details and the design have remained exactly the same.

In particular, the center pistil on both sides, enameled in black, (photos 5 and 6) is exactly as in 1931; so are the frosted glass thickness and quality, a nice change from the famous "Moineaux", the sparrow figurines, which over the years from 1928 to nowadays have become pitiful lumps of graceless glass with no details whatsoever. The "Dahlia Nr 3" spray is repertoried and photographed in the large Marcilhac book on page 354 of the French 2010 edition (photo 9) under reference 665.

On this particular bottle, the body, the sculpture and the center black enamel on each side are excellent. The rubber pear (pump) displays perfectly but it has hardened and dried and it does not work. It is perfect to look at and admire, but one would have to replace the pump to properly use the spray.

This is the case for all surviving bottles and It can be done if one wishes to. The item "Lalique France Dahlia Spray Bottle Nr. 3 (6), From 1931 Supplementary Bath Set" is in sale since Friday, March 12, 2021. This item is in the category "Pottery & Glass\Glass\Art Glass\French\Lalique".
