This bottle is of a general type that is often termed black glass even though the bottle is actually a very dark olive green in color. This bottle appears as solid black when not backlit.

This example is of a very large & extremely impressive size which probably held a magnum. But, we have not tested it with liquid. The bottle is of a mallet shape with slightly sloping shoulders. It has a sheared fire polished applied double wrapped string lip. There is lots of surface wear & there are many surface scratches.

Approximately 75% of the exterior surface of the glass has original gloss. This bottle has a relatively clear interior & appears to have been an above ground bottle all of its life. The bottle has nice swirl lines & some small bubbles are present. There is a pleasing kick up to the pontil under the base which is only just very, very slightly sharp to the touch. The bottle has a very large & impressive stature measuring to the height of 10 3/4 inches. The base diameter ranges from 5 3/4 inches to a whopping 6 inches. There is one shallow chip at the bottom edge which measures 5/16 inch by 5/8 inch (at its widest point) by about 1/16 inch deep. There is a patch of glass 1 1/2 inches long by 1/2 inch wide next to the chip that is rough to the touch. This small area of glass seems to have not annealed properly in the making. There are a couple of tiny insignificant moons.

There are, however, two quite large & significant cracks. One crack on the side goes from the shoulder to the base at an angle & measures approximately 4 1/2 inches long. The other crack loops up over the shoulder at the angle of a "c" with a long tail & goes down to the base. This crack measures a total of approximately 10 inches long taking in to account the curve of the "c" as well as the tail.

We have looked long & hard underneath the base & cannot see either of the cracks extending under the base. But, it is a real challenge to see clearly under the base as the area under the base appears solid black even when the bottle is held up in very bright light. These cracks are two significant flaws!! However, even so, this still is a wonderful & impressive bottle!!

This is, as expected, a heavy weight bottle which tips the scale at 3 pounds & 3.5 ounces. A pleasing early wine bottle of a type that is always a welcome addition to a collection & certainly is a rarity in this large & impressive size.
