Antique Open Pontil American (CT/New England) Black Glass 8-Sided Snuff Bottle

  

Up for sale is a stunning antique open pontiled early American (New England area) eight sided Snuff Bottle or jar. This classic pre-Civil War New England made snuff bottle comes in a shining black glass color, and when held up to a light it reveals its beautiful deep olive amber undertones. This color is often attributed to the Stoddard or Keene glass factories, though it could have been made at a variety of factories in New England. It descended through a collection in CT specifically, though. Alongside its beautiful color it also boasts a wide and sharp open pontil scar on its base.

The base also features a recessed circle mark and another oblong recessed mark which resembles a capital "D". The bottle was blown in a hinge mold, with four beveled corners and four flat sides.

It has a short and wavy flared lip with a small spot of roughness that occurred in the making. The glass is whittled, bubbly, and full of character. It stands 4.25" high, 2.6" long, and 1.75 wide. Condition is basically as mint as can be - no chips or cracks anywhere, and barely any usage wear on the base. One superficial scratch on the body keeps it from 10/10 mint but I'd give it a 9.5 out of 10.
