Tall / long dark BLACK PURPLE AMETHYST colored glass figural POWDER HORN CANDY CONTAINER or AUTO/CAR VASE. This is an ORIGINAL ANTIQUE hand B lown I nto M old figural (BIM) with a tooled top, dating it back over 100 years old. Condition : Vase is in PRISTINE SPARKLING CLEAN condition. NO cracks, chips, dings, damage, etc.

Age : An ORIGINAL ANTIQUE hand-blown bottle (Blown-In-Mold = BIM) with a tooled-top, ca. A BEAUTIFUL antique glass figural container and not often seen in this dark PURPLE AMETHYST color. There are two schools of thought on these powder horn vases.

One, it is a century + old Auto Vase that hung inside the earliest and fanciest of USA made automobiles, to put flowers in. There is merit to this as s ometime back, while watching the movie Titantic, we noticed that in one scene taking place inside of one of the vintage cars, one of these glass auto vases is hanging in the back interior of the vehicle, and the scene was a recreation of a 1912 scene. It was hung by a chord that went through the glass handle, through a hanger, then around the neck, and the pointed tip also has an indentation where it was also secured by, for maximum stability. These would of held dried flowers or live roses as well. T his latter idea of a candy container seems to be the more prevalent idea BUT I have to say that the former explanation makes more sense, that these were designed to be used as antique car vases.

What really sets this one apart from the others is the color, the most beautiful dark purple or, in this case, black amethyst color. You hear about old glass turning purple in the sun (sun colored amethyst = SCA) in general terms, here is how it works: The purple color is the result of having manganese in the glass. Manganese is a mineral, a rock, that was mined, crushed, and pulverized into a powder, then added to vats of molten liquid glass, and acted as a decolorizing agent to turn the natural aqua-tinted glass into a pure crystal clear colorless glass. But when exposed to the ultraviolet rays of the sun or other sources of UV rays, it triggers a chemical reaction and the manganese oxidizes and turns a wonderful amethyst color. We had a friend of ours accelerate the sun color purple process by running this vase through an industrial food sterilizer which has the same affect as the sun, but a lot faster.

This purple color will only take place with true antique vessels with manganese in the glass, with few exceptions, only glass blown before 1914 has manganese in it and will turn sun-colored-amethyst. Not only does the purple color make it a spectacular looking powder horn, it also authenticates it as being truly antique , check it out!
