LARGE 18th CENTURY BLOWN GLASS FARMER'S FLASK

  

These large flasks were produced in Languedoc, France and Catalonia, Spain. Undoubted by some of the same glass blowers who migrated from region to region. They are indicative to the Pyrenees Mountain region and were carried by goat herders, sheep herders, farmers and all types of other people on horses through the rough terrain.

They were blown in the old German half-post method employing 2 gathers of glass. The same method was used on the American Pitkin flasks. Some of these giant flasks had plain sheared lips and some had tooled folded lips. Ours has a folded lip and lots of beautiful swirls in glass! It is a lovely deep aqua color.

One of these bottles, in a lovely deep blue/green color, is pictured in the book Flasche, Bottle und Bouteille by Rainer Kosler, page 469, see last photo. Kosler dates it to the first half of the 18th century. 10 ½ tall clear aqua and perfect! A gorgeous hunk of 18th century glass!
