Large, Bold Antique Black Glass French Food Storage Jar, Pontil. Large handblown antique storage or food jar of forest green or medium green color, presenting a bold, hefty look because of its size and bulk. This jar is 12¾ inches high and has a diameter of about 6 inches.
It is heavy, weighing just a tiny bit under 4 pounds. Lots of quaint irregularities -- interesting irregular neck with indentation, some scratches and some small bubbles. It has a shallow pontil on the bottom and good wear marks. In France these are called bocals (jars) or cornichons , which is the word for small pickled cucumbers. They were filled with food for preserving and then a cloth was placed over the top and tied around the crimped neck. These date from the early 19th century, from about 1800 to 1830.
