It is heavy, weighing just a tiny bit under 3 pounds, 3 ounces. Lots of quaint irregularities -- interesting irregular neck with indentation, some scratches and a -inch bubble. It has a shallow pontil on the bottom and good wear marks. We have photographed it from several angles so you can get a good idea of the conditon.
The last photographs show the bubble, which was in the making and adds to its special quality. In France these are called bocals (jars) or cornichons , which is the word for small pickled cucumbers.
They were filled with food for preserving and then a cloth was placed over the top and tied around the crimped neck. These date from the early 19th century, from about 1800 to 1830. They have great character and make spectacular vases. Thank you for looking at our item. _gsrx_vers_1247 GS 8.2 (1247).The item "Large, Bold Antique Black Glass French Food Storage Jar, Pontil.
