Tall Heavy Antique Black Glass French Food Storage Jar with Pontil Good Condtion. Large handblown antique storage or food jar of forest green or medium green color. This jar is 13¼ inches high and has a diameter of about 5 inches. It weighs just a tad more than 4½ pounds. Lots of quaint irregularities -- interesting irregular neck with indentation, some scratches and two nice big bubbles.

It has a partially polished pontil on the bottom and good wear marks. In France these are called bocals (jars) or cornichons , which is the word for small pickled cucumbers. They were filled with food for preserving and then a cloth was placed over the top and tied around the crimped neck. These date from the early 19th century, from about 1800 to 1830.
