Tall Heavy Antique Black Glass French Food Storage Jar with Pontil Good Condtion. Excellent Vase for Flowers or Dried Arrangements. Large handblown antique storage or food jar of the very delirable dark wine-bottle green color.
This jar is 12 inches high and has a diameter of about 5. It weighs just a bit under 3 pounds. Lots of quaint irregularities fairly narrow neck indentation, some surface scratches and small bubbles. It has one larger bubble, about ½ an inch across on which the thin upper layer has chipped, giving it a particaularly individual character (see detailed photographs of this feature). It has a partially polished shallow pontil on the bottom and good wear marks. In France these are called bocals (jars) or cornichons , which is the word for small pickled cucumbers. They were filled with food for preserving and then a cloth was placed over the top and tied around the crimped neck.
